About the Event

This is an invitation-only Argentine tango gathering. It brings together dancers with an appreciation of the close embrace "milonguero" style and focuses on fostering a comfortable, intimate, and respectful environment.
The enchanting setting and relaxed atmosphere of Port Townsend, combined with our shared love of tango music and traditions from Golden Age milongas of Buenos Aires, offer a unique setting for renewing and creating meaningful connections. Emphasis on skilled floor craft, attention to role balance, and supporting community values encourage a welcoming, respectful environment for all participants.
Our emphasis will be on providing a high-quality experience for all with a manageable dance floor. We plan to host around 140 participants, with a balance of leaders and followers.
Our core values include high standards for safe and respectful interaction. We follow traditional tango etiquette such as the use of cabeceo and mirada. These principles, including consideration for one's partner and the other couples on the dance floor, will allow everyone to enjoy themselves.
We are proud to present a stellar lineup of DJs, each highly experienced in curating a selection of tandas from the Golden Age of tango music. Tandas are chosen to create a balanced flow, matching and enhancing the connections on the dance floor.

Event Logistics

We encourage elegant, tango-inspired attire that reflects the tradition of Argentine tango while ensuring comfort for dancing. Dance-appropriate shoes are essential. Kindly respect the other participants by avoiding casual or overly informal clothing, such as jeans, shorts, or sneakers.
We will have an open seating arrangement, without separate sections for leaders and followers. Although this setup may complicate the use of mirada and cabeceo for partner selection, we believe open seating results in a more relaxed atmosphere in keeping with the overall nature of our event. Note that we still expect the cabeceo to be used in offering and accepting a request to dance. In short, be respectful, kind, and understanding.
No, there will not be vendors at our event. If there is sufficient interest, we could arrange for a shoe and clothing swap event, in which case we will post details on our Facebook page.
Light snacks and refreshments will be provided throughout the event. You are encouraged to bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated as needed. Hot food such as samosas or hand pies will also be provided at times during evening milongas and there is a brunch on Sunday. Although the exact menu is not available at this time, we intend to provide adequate quantities of high-quality fuel, with options for various dietary preferences.
The venue has a full bar located just outside the hall, which will be open during the milongas. Alcohol policies will follow venue and state regulations. This said, please note that anyone showing signs of inebriation will be politely invited to enjoy watching the dance from the safety of their chair. Ningún borrachos, por favor!
The weekend is dedicated to the art and practice of social dancing in the "milonguero" style. The encuentro itself does not include workshops or classes. However, maestra Monica Paz will be in town for several days prior to the event. We encourage anyone interested in bringing more depth and subtlety to their dance to take Monica's workshops and consider private lessons with her. Details are on our Extras page.

Location & Preparation

Port Townsend is a charming coastal town, known for its historic Victorian architecture, maritime culture, and scenic beauty. Though late June is usually quite temperate, be prepared for the possibility of cool, breezy weather - bring layers to stay comfortable. Accommodations can fill up quickly during summer weekends, we recommend booking early.
We prioritize safety and will comply with all local health guidelines in place at the time of the event. Updates will be shared with participants closer to the event date. Participants are asked to self-monitor for symptoms and avoid attending if feeling unwell. If in any doubt, taking Covid tests are a considerate precaution.
We strive to create an inclusive experience. If you have special needs, such as dietary restrictions, transportation assistance, or other accommodations, please let us know during the application process or contact us in advance to discuss how we can support you.
